Initially a bassoonist, Marc Minkowski began conducting at an early age, notably under the guidance of Charles Bruck at the Pierre Monteux Memorial School in the United States. At the age of nineteen he founded Les Musiciens du Louvre, an ensemble that was to play an active role in the Baroque revival. Together they explored both the French repertoire (Lully, Rameau, Mondonville, etc.) and Händel (Il trionfo del Tempo, Ariodante, Giulio Cesare, Hercules, the Roman motets, and the orchestral music), before going on to tackle Mozart, Rossini, Offenbach, Bizet, and Wagner. As conductor, he has travelled all over Europe from Salzburg (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Die Fledermaus, Mitridate, Così fan tutte in 2011) to Brussels (La Cenerentola, Massenet’s Don Quichotte, Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, and Il trovatore in the near future) and from Aix-en-Provence (Le nozze di Figaro, Idomeneo) to Zurich (Agrippina, Les Boréades, Fidelio, La Favorite) by way of the Musikfest Bremen. A regular visitor to the Opéra de Paris (Platée, Die Zauberflöte, Iphigénie en Tauride, Mireille) and the Théâtre du Châtelet (La Belle Hélène, Carmen, the French premiere of Wagner’s Die Feen), he is also seen at other Parisian houses, especially the Opéra-Comique, where he revived Boieldieu’s La Dame blanche and conducted Pelléas et Mélisande for the work’s centenary in 2002 and Massenet’s Cendrillon in 2011, but also in Venice (Auber’s Le Domino noir), Moscow (the Russian stage premiere of Pelléas), Vienna Staatsoper where Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble were the first foreign orchestra to play in the pit (Handel’s Alcina in 2010) and Amsterdam (Roméo et Juliette, Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide and Iphigénie en Tauride in autumn 2011). In 2012, he conducts Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet at the Theater an der Wien and a new production of Händel’s Il trionfo del Tempo at the Staatsoper in Berlin.

Marc Minkowski has been music director of Sinfonia Varsovia since 2008, and is also a regular guest of symphony orchestras in repertoire increasingly focusing on the twentieth-century composers Ravel, Stravinsky, Lili Boulanger, Roussel, Adams, Gorecki, and Olivier Greif. He is often invited to Germany – by the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Berlin Philharmonic, the DSO Berlin, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra – and also conducts the Wiener Symphoniker, the Mozarteum Orchester in Salzburg, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Orchestra, the Orchestra National du Capitole de Toulouse, the BBCSO, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestre, the Finnish Radio Orchestra and the recently formed Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. After their success at the Wiener Konzerthaus in 2009 with a complete cycle of Haydn’s ‘London’ Symphonies recorded live by Naïve (their exclusive record label since 2007), Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble played the complete Schubert symphonies there in 2012.

Marc Minkowski has been appointed artistic director of the Salzburg Mozartwoche, which he will programme from the 2013 edition onwards. In June 2011 he inaugurated Ré Majeure, the festival he founded on the Île de Ré off the French Atlantic coast.
