Andrés Orozco-Estrada

Andrés Orozco-Estrada, born in Colombia and trained in Vienna, is one of the most outstanding young conductors of his generation. In 2004, he had his break-through conducting the Tonkünstler Orchestra (Austria) with one stand-in concert at the Vienna Musikverein - celebrated by the Viennese press as a "wonder from Vienna", engagements with numerous international orchestras followed and an intensive musical cooperation with the Tonkünstler Orchestra began at this time. At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Orozco-Estrada was appointed music director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra where he succeeded Kristjan Järvi, Carlos Kalmar and Fabio Luisi. This orchestra holds subscription series at the Vienna Musikverein and is Orchestra-in-Residence at the Grafenegg Festival. At the same time, Orozco-Estrada took on the role as Principal Conductor at the Basque National Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi).

Orozco-Estrada has already worked with some of the world’s leading orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. At his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in autumn 2010, Orozco-Estrada was hailed "a brilliant stand-in" ("Wiener Zeitung") for Esa-Pekka Salonen and celebrated as an "eminent talent" ("Die Presse"). Recent engagement highlights include performances with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Komische Oper Orchestra (Berlin) Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, NDR Hannover, a UK tour with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, a Switzerland tour with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, a South American tour with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and a highly successful production of La Traviata with the Stuttgart State Opera.

In the 2011/12 season, Orozco-Estrada makes his debut with the New World Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Santa Cecilia Rome, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Gürzenich Orchestra, and returns to the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Leipzig Gewandhaus and for two separate programmes to the Munich Philharmonic. Future engagement highlights include debuts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Radio, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestras, NDR Hamburg Symphony and WDR Cologne.

His CD recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 with the Tonkünstler Orchestra (Preiser Records) was exceptionally well received by critics and in the classical music magazine Crescendo, it was listed among "the best Mahler albums". Currently Orozco-Estrada is preparing a recording of all the Mendelssohn symphonies with the Tonkünstler Orchestra - in March 2011, the first disc featuring Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major Lobgesang with Christiane Oelze, Simona Saturová and Ian Bostridge was released to great critical acclaim.

Born in 1977 in Medellín (Columbia), Andrés Orozco-Estrada began his musical studies on the violin and had his first conducting lessons at the age of 15. In 1997, he came to Vienna where he joined the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the renowned Vienna Music Academy and completed his degree with distinction by conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein. The emphasis of his artistic work lies in the Romantic repertoire and Viennese classicism. At the same time, Orozco-Estrada shows a keen interest in contemporary music and regularly performs premieres of Austrian composers such as Christian Muthspiel, Johannes Maria Staud or Gerald Resch, as well as compositions of Spanish and South American origin. Orozco-Estrada currently lives in Vienna and his website is: http://orozcoestrada.com.
