Leif Ove Andsnes' Beethoven Journey: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3, with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, has garnered universal international acclaim and was named iTunes Instrumental Album of the Year in The US. 2012 Classic BRIT Female Artist of the Year Nicola Benedetti adds the title of iTunes Best Female Classical Album of the Year for her Silver Violin.
The universally acclaimed Beethoven Journey is the first release in a Sony Classical cycle of Beethoven’s five piano concertos with Andsnes leading the Mahler Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard. This epic project will span four years and feature concerts around the world. The album was also chosen as Gramophone and BBC Music magazines’ recording of the month for November, with the Gramophone writing, “Now this is something very special, and it marks an exciting debut for Leif Ove “there’s so much more to this than just exceptional playing; there's a palpable sense of discovery, of living the music”.
Nicola Benedetti’s Silver Violin is a collection of music inspired by and featured in films with the Korngold: Violin Concerto, featuring themes from the composer’s scores for Another Dawn, Anthony Adverse and The Prince and the Pauper, at its centre. The album has made sales history in the UK as it is the bestselling release by a British classical instrumentalist since Nigel Kennedy’s 1991 The Four Seasons. This nod continues a superb 2012 for Nicola in which she became the youngest soloist ever for BBC Last Night the Proms, made her debuts at the Edinburgh International Festival with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev; in Munich and with the Hallé and recently performed for HM Queen Elizabeth II during the 100th Royal Variety Show in London’s Royal Albert Hall.
