IMG Artists is pleased to announce that Vladimir Jurowski has accepted the position of Artistic Director of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia (Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra) with immediate effect, for an initial period of three years. Mr Jurowski will work with the orchestra management and the Ministry of Culture as an artistic figurehead to provide a renewed direction and profile for the orchestra following the departure of Mark Gorenstein from the position of Principal Conductor and Artistic Director in September 2011. He will also conduct the orchestra in a limited number of performances to be confirmed during the coming seasons.
The appointment sees Moscow-born Jurowski strengthening his already close connections with the Russian capital and its musical institutions. From 2005 to 2009 he served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Russian National Orchestra, producing a series of acclaimed recordings for PentaTone Records, and he is currently working at the Bolshoi Theatre rehearsing a new production of Glinka's 'Ruslan and Ludmila' directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov, which will mark the long-awaited opening of the Theatre on 2nd November, following its extensive renovation.
Alongside this new appointment, Jurowski retains his existing positions and commitments as Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Principal Artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
