In 1983, International Management Group (IMG) president Mark McCormack played a game of golf with his friend, world-renowned soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. McCormack would later recall Dame Kiri encouraging his move into music: “I’m going to teach you culture,” she told him. “The first thing you have to know is it’s intermission, not half-time.”
Revolutionary in his management of sports legends such as Arnold Palmer and Pele, McCormack realized the potential for applying IMG’s versatile expertise to celebrities in the performing arts world; like athletes, artists were in need of good business guidance, and like sports, music was a multinational pastime marketable around the globe.
Since those early beginnings, IMG Artists has attracted exciting talent and fostered a client roster that has grown to be powerful, deep and diverse.
Simultaneously, a small, New York City-based management company called Hamlen/Landau was looking for investors. Founded in 1979 by Charles Hamlen and Edna Landau, the boutique agency was characterized by its willingness to engage in a dialogue with artists about their careers rather than simply dictating what was “best” for them. Seeking advice, Hamlen and Landau met with James Wolfensohn, then Chairman of the Board at Carnegie Hall and future President of the World Bank. An old friend of McCormack’s, Wolfensohn knew IMG planned to expand its business into the performing arts world. Wasting no time, he called McCormack during the meeting, and, on January 11, 1984, Hamlen/Landau became IMG Artists.
Since those early beginnings, IMG Artists has attracted exciting talent and fostered a client roster that has grown to be powerful, deep and diverse. Through the years, the company has developed young artists and built upon the success of established superstars to now include the representation of acclaimed conductors, instrumentalists, vocalists, orchestras and ensembles, dance companies, musicals, jazz and world music groups, orchestras and multi-media productions.
Recognizing a global demand for its clients, IMG Artists expanded its presence outside New York in 1991 with an office based in London. With offices now in Los Angeles, Paris, Hannover, Berlin, Lucca, Abu Dhabi and Singapore, the company’s global reach is incomparable within the industry.
IMG Artists is proud that the foundations of professionalism and personal care established in its first years of the company are still the essential tenets of its unique vision and management style today.
In addition to artist management and touring, IMG Artists extended its lines of business to include that of festivals, event management and consulting. Originating from its appointment as operational consultant to PETRONAS for the establishment of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in Kuala Lumpur, IMG Artists has continued to advise sovereign and corporate clients across the globe that are developing new performing arts companies, venues, festivals and other major events.
Beyond its established offices, IMG Artists is now also known for seeking out distinctive partnerships and working closely together with these partners to craft collaborative initiatives. Be it traditional record companies or innovative educational bodies, projects and events that are developed in association with IMG Artists are continuously dynamic and break new ground.
IMG Artists is proud that the foundations of professionalism and personal care established in its first years of the company are still the essential tenets of its unique vision and management style today. Creative, committed and distinguished, IMG Artists continues to be an industry leader, firmly dedicated to the finest management for each of its artists and clients across the globe.
