David Bates opens his 2020/21 season with a new production of Handel’s Il Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno for Staatsoper Hannover.  Marking his debut with the company, the opera is directed by Elisabeth Stöppler, featuring Sarah Brady, Sunnyboy Dladla, Nina van Essen, and Rodrigo Sosa Dal Pozzo in its cast. The production opens on 19 September, with further performances on 22, 24 September, and 2, 9, 17, 23, 30 October 2020.

With his own period ensemble La Nuova Musica, David Bates has gained a distinguished reputation for his work in Early Music, with a substantial output of recorded work to date. Their most recent release of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice for Pentatone was recorded live at St John’s Smith Square. It features Iestyn Davies, Sophie Bevan and Rebecca Bottone, and has just been shortlisted for a 2020 Gramophone Award: “The orchestra, too, is extremely accomplished… The horns are splendidly prominent… The dances are all played with fire or grace, as appropriately…beautifully phrased and perfectly balanced… High praise, then, for David Bates and his ensemble.”

Further afield, David Bates’ opera plans include Komische Oper and Opera de Rouen Normandie.
