Soprano Eliza Boom was awarded the Carlo Maria Giulini Prize at the 11th International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition. The $5,000 prize honours a “performance of profound musical expression, drawing on the essence of humanity.” Ms Boom performed Halki’s recitative and aria, ”‘O jakżebym klęczeć… Gdyby rannym słonkiem”, from Stanisław Moniuszko’s opera Halka and Wally’s aria, “Ebben! Ne andrò lontana” from Alfredo Catalani’s La Wally, at the final held at Teatr Wielki-Polish National Opera on 11 June 2022. Former winner, countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński also performed at the ceremony during the jury’s deliberation. The final is available to stream through 11 December at teatrwielki.pl.
The International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition was founded in 1992 by soprano Maria Fołtyn, and is the most prestigious vocal competition in Poland. In addition to championing the highest calibre of vocal artistry, the triennial competition also serves to promote repertoire by Polish composers including its patron Stanisław Moniuszko as well as pieces by Fryderyk Chopin, Karol Szymanowski, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Paweł Mykietyn, or Mieczysław Weinberg.
New Zealand soprano Eliza Boom is swiftly building an international opera career with her “outstanding voice…with a sparkling top and pianissimo spin” and performances of “moving tenderness and beauty” (New Zealand’s Radio 13). A current member of the Bayerische Staatsoper Opernstudio, she studied at the National Opera Studio in London, and at the Royal Northern College of Music on their International Artist Diploma and Master of Music in Performance programmes. In New Zealand, Eliza studied music at the University of Waikato and Vision College.
During her time at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Eliza has performed the roles of Woglinde (Das Rheingold), Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte), Priestess (Aïda), Soprano (Singularity, M. Srnka), and Herzogin Marie (Il Signor Bruschino), amongst others. Eliza’s other roles include Donna Anna (Don Giovanni, Clonter Opera), Thérèse/Tirésias (Les Mamelles de Tirésias, Les Azuriales Opera), Micäela (Carmen, cover, Bayerische Staatsoper), Nella (Gianni Schicchi, RNCM), the title role of Suor Angelica (cover, RNCM), Mimì (La Bohème, scenes, Welsh National Opera and Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra), Noémie (Cendrillon, RNCM), Gertrude (Hansel and Gretel, RNCM), Juliette (Roméo et Juliette, selected scenes in concert), Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro, University of Waikato) and Laetitia (The Old Maid and the Thief, University of Waikato). Eliza’s recent concert engagements include Ein Deutches Requiem, Missa in Angustiis, Petite Messe Solennelle and Vesperae solennes de confessore.
Ms Boom’s 2022/23 highlights include singing Pat Nixon in Nixon in China in Daniel Kramer’s production for Staatstheater Hannover.
