“MAGICAL” YUNCHAN LIM – THE 2022 CLIBURN GOLD MEDAL WINNER – JOINS IMG ARTISTS FOR GENERAL MANAGEMENT

22 Oct 2022

IMG Artists is thrilled to announce that the sensational pianistYunchan Lim, joins its roster for General Management. He will be represented by Nicholas Mathias and Federico M. Benigni from the company’s London office, in conjunction with MOC Production for Asia.

The 18-year-old Korean became the youngest person to ever win gold at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition when his astonishing performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 electrified the jury and audience in June 2022. Seen and Heard International reports that, “the applause that followed was endless: a star had emerged before our eyes.” ClassicFM writes, “Lim stormed his way through the finale of Rachmaninov’s mighty work, as Marin Alsop attentively directed the [Fort Worth Symphony] Orchestra in keeping with the young pianist’s impressive pace. Alsop could be seen nodding in approval as Lim expertly transitioned from dramatic cadenzas to the sweeping Romantic themes that Rachmaninov is known and loved for,” adding, “As Lim finished the piece in a sensational flourish, the world-class conductor could be seen wiping tears from her eyes.” The video of the performance broke records and trended globally, reaching #24 on YouTube’s overall charts and has been viewed nearly 9-million times. Lim also captured the coveted Audience Award and Best Performance of a New Work (for Sir Stephen Hough’s Fanfare Toccata).

Lim’s rise to international stardom is meteoric. He has earned a legion of admirers throughout his native South Korea for his “magical ability” and “natural, instinctive quality” (La Scena), and has performed with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras. He will continue his assent in 2022/23 with his inaugural tour as Cliburn winner on four continents. Highlights include Aspen Music Festival, La Jolla Music Society, and Performing Arts Houston in the United States; Seoul Arts Center, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and the KBS and Korean National Symphony Orchestras in Asia; and recital tours in Europe and South America.

Yunchan Lim said: “I’m very excited and delighted to be joining IMG Artists. I will now be represented globally, and I am looking forward to sharing my music making with the greatest audiences in the most renowned concert halls.”

Nick says: “My colleagues and I at IMG Artists are really delighted that Yunchan Lim is joining us for General Management. Since becoming the winner of the Van Cliburn Competition a few months ago Yunchan has attracted worldwide attention with his extraordinary performances. There is no doubt that Yunchan is an exceptional musical talent and someone who is clearly destined for a major international career of the highest level in the years ahead. We very much look forward to helping and guiding Yunchan on this journey.”

Federico adds: “Yunchan’s a rare prodigy whose intelligent virtuosity merges with his deep knowledge and transcendental passion for Music. Since the first time I heard him playing it was clear to me to be in front of a dazzling star! Indeed, it’s a great honor to be representing Yunchan and working alongside Nick in developing his career for the years to come.”

Born in Siheung, Korea, Yunchan Lim began piano lessons at age 7, when it was time to choose an after-school activity. He entered the Music Academy of the Seoul Arts Center the next year, and quickly became immersed in his musical studies. He was accepted into the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts at age 13, where he met his teacher and mentor, Minsoo Sohn. He first captured international attention in 2018 when, aged only 14, he won both Second Prize and the Chopin Special Award at the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. Later that year, as the youngest participant, he won both the Third Prize and Audience Prize at the Cooper International Completion, affording him the opportunity to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra. In 2019, at 15, he became the youngest artist to win Korea’s IsangYun International Competition, as well as two special prizes. He was selected to perform for the Korean Broadcasting System’s 2020 Young Musicians of Korea recording. Yunchan is currently in his second year at the Korean National University of Arts where he continues to study with Mr Sohn.
