Manoj Kamps will conduct the world premiere of Harriet: Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman by Hilda Parades on Wednesday 3 Oct 2018 at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. Co-commissioned by the Festival Internacional Cervantino (Mexico), Muziekgebouw aan ‘IJ, and Muziektheater Transparant, the production will additionally be performed in the Cervantino Festival in October 2018, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in November 2018, in Festival Croix-Rousse in Lyon in December 2018. This work is described by the composer as “an opera, a musical and theatrical portrait of the African American freedom fighter Harriet Tubman (ca. 1822-1913), who saved countless slaves”. The libretto is based on poetry by Mayra Santos-Febres and a selection of dialogues by Lex Bohlmeijer.
Harriet was produced by Muziek Theater Transparant with funds provided by Rotterdam Operadagen, FONCA, Coordinación de Difusión Cultural UNAM,Festival Internacional Cervantino and The Composers’ Fund, a PRS for Music Foundation initiative in association with Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Claron McFadden sings the title role of Harriet and Naomi Beeldens the role of Alice. Manoj Kamps conducts members of the Hermes Ensemble and the production is directed by Jean Lacornerie with video by Miwa Matreyek.
Additionally, Manoj will be acting as assistant conductor for Nederlandse Reisopera’s production of Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt in November/December 2018. This season also sees him appearing with ASKO/Schoenberg Ensemble, Brussels Philharmonic and with Brucknerhaus Orchester, Linz.
