Manoj Kamps conducts the official world premiere of Korean-Dutch composer Seung-Won Oh’s YeonDo on 14 November as part of the contemporary festival November Music at the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center. Performed by singer Helena Rasker, Cappella Pratensis, and the New European Ensemble, YeonDo will be repeated at the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw on 18 November. Composed as a Requiem, YeonDo sheds light on the ancient Korean Catholic Church tradition of group prayer before burials, preparing the deceased for their onward journey to a new world. The spiritual sound world, which draws upon percussion, meditative string passages and voices to create an intense aural experience for the audience, is complemented by the lighting designed by Tim van ‘t Hof.
Manoj’s 2021/22 season engagements include their Royal Philharmonic Orchestra debut in a relaxed concert, their Philharmonia Orchestra debut in a Music of Today concert at the Southbank Centre (repertoire includes Lisa Lim’s How Forests Think), an extensive tour of Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3 across The Netherlands performed by Phion Orchestra (with whom Manoj will tour again at the end of this season), and a Louis Andriessen tribute concert at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague with players from the Residentie Orchestra, Slagwerk Den Haag, and Asko|Schönberg ensemble. Highlights from recent seasons include an NTR recording with Orkest De Ereprijs Phion, I SOLISTI at De Bijloke Muziekcentrum, and conducting the world premiere of Anthon Fiumara’s One Thousand Roads – Travel with soprano Claron McFadden and ensembles B’Rock and KLANG at the Bachfest Dordrecht.
With equal success in the opera world, Manoj returns to Dutch National Opera this season for a new creation as part of the Opera Forward Festival, working alongside director Lisenka Heijboer Castañón and Asko|Schönberg. Following a hugely successfully debut in 2019, Manoj also returns to conduct Opera North in the UK in autumn 2022. Notable previous engagements include the creation of FAUST [working title] for Dutch National Opera with Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit, assisting and conducting alongside Christian Curnyn in Opera North’s Giulio Cesare, conducting the premiere and tour of Hilda Parades’ Harriet with MuziektheaterTransparant, and Manoj’s US debut conducting the premiere of Andrea Clearfield’s Mila, Great Sorcerer at the Prototype Festival in New York.
