In recognition of the recent acclaimed recordings made with Thomas Dausgaard and Ludovic Morlot, it was announced this week that the Seattle Symphony has been nominated for Gramophone’s Orchestra of the Year award.

Principal Guest Conductor and Music Director Designate Thomas Dausgaard has been celebrated for many notable achievements with the Seattle Symphony in recent seasons, including the universally acclaimed and Gramophone Award-shortlisted recording of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony, as well as the “bracing and thrilling coupling” of Nielsen’s Third and Fourth Symphonies cited in the Orchestra of the Year nomination (Gramophone Magazine, July 2018).

The Orchestra of the Year Award is newly created for the 2018 Gramophone Classical Music Awards, and the Seattle Symphony is the only North American orchestra to be represented on the shortlist.  The nominations were drawn up by Gramophone‘s editors and will be voted on by Gramophone readers.

It was announced last year that Thomas Dausgaard, the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor since 2014, will become the next Music Director of the Seattle Symphony from the 2019/20 season.

Voting opens with the publication of the July issue of Gramophone on June 15 and remains open until July 31. Votes can be made at gramophone.co.uk/awards/2018. The winner of the Orchestra of the Year Award will be announced at the awards ceremony on September 13.
