Cellist and rising star Sheku Kanneh-Mason received The Times Breakthrough Award at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards last night, in a ceremony which took place at The Savoy in London and featured a performance by tenor Lawrence Brownlee. The Sky Arts Awards recognise British achievements in the arts, with The Times Breakthrough Award recognising up and coming British talent.

Sheku, who was the recipient of the BBC Young Musician of The Year in 2016, comes from an incredible musical family in which all six of his siblings (he is the third child of seven) play instruments to a phenomenally high standard – yet neither parents are musicians. Simon Cowell called them “the most talented family in the world” during a performance on TV’s Britain’s Got Talent.

The show will be broadcast on Sky Arts, Wednesday 12th July 8pm GMT.
