On the 15th of October 2019 the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation confirmed that Vladimir Jurowski’s contract as Artistic Director of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov” will be extended until the 1st of July, 2021.

Vladimir Jurowski became the Artistic Director of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov” on the 24th of October, 2011, and his tenure has marked a period of tremendous artistic growth and profile, both in Russia and on the international scene. Jurowski has been instrumental in conceiving and realizing numerous distinctive artistic projects, including the acclaimed “Stories with Orchestra” concert series, performances of contemporary works at the “Another Space” Festival in Moscow, and the annual “Summer. Music. Museum” Festival in Istra, as well as performances of opera in concert, CD recordings, and numerous touring appearances in Europe and further afield.

Jurowski stated: “October 2019 marks eight years since the day of my appointment to the position of the Artistic Director of the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra. It has been the happiest and most fruitful time for me, full of musical collaboration and mutual understanding of the highest calibre. I’m very grateful to the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for its unwavering support of our initiatives, and its sincere interest in our work together. I am very glad that we have reached an agreement to extend my work in this position, and look forward to many inspiring future projects. 2021 will mark the beginning of a new important period in my life, when I take up the position of Music Director at the Bavarian State Opera. Working at the Opera requires a lot of time and energy, so it will see a significant change to the balance of my career and commitments, however I sincerely hope that my creative partnership with the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra will continue in 2021 and beyond, and that we will meet many times ahead in the concerts halls of Russia and other countries.

Jurowski currently holds the titles of Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (which he also relinquishes in the summer of 2021), Chief Conductor of the Rundfunk-sinfonieorchester Berlin, Principal Artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and Artistic Director of the George Enescu International Festival.

This month Jurowski returns to the orchestra to conduct a concert performance of Wagner’s Das Rheingold on 30 October http://www.gaso.ru/gosorch/eng/calendar/o_28271 , and the orchestra has also just released its latest recording with Jurowski, on Pentatone Records, of Tchaikovsky’s complete ‘Nutcracker’ ballet. http://www.pentatonemusic.com/tchaikovsky-nutcracker-gaso-vladimir-jurowski
