Following on from a hugely successful debut with Melbourne Symphony in September 2019, Xian Zhang returns to Australia to make her debut with Sydney Symphony Orchestra. On Wednesday 3 July 2019 at the Sydney Opera House, the programme opens with the overture to Verdi’s La forza del destino, continues with Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor (performed by Vadim Gluzman) and concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

Of her Melbourne performances, Lisa MacKinney from Limelight Magazine wrote:

“From the opening bars, Xian Zhang’s complete command of the New World was evident as she guided the MSO, without a score, through a thrilling account of its toe-tappingly propulsive rhythms, irresistible melodies and the sweeping lyricism of the Largo. Clearly having a ball, Zhang grinned broadly as she dipped and soared throughout a sharp and utterly assured performance that it was truly a pleasure to witness.”

Xian Zhang’s 2018/19 season concludes with the world premiere of a work by Caroline Shaw, plus Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl on 27 and 29 August 2019.
