Conductor Ana María Patiño-Osorio has triumphed at the 2024 Malko Competition winning Second Prize, the Audience Prize and the Youth Jury Prize at the prestigious competition. The finals saw Ana María conduct the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in the 1st movement of Brahms: Symphony No. 1 and Nielsen’s “Masquerade – Dance of the Cockerel”.

In his article on the Finalists, Andrew Mellor writes, “What is there to say about Ana María Patiño-Osorio, other than that everyone appears to adore her? That includes some of the most hard-nosed members of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. …she is a conductor to be reckoned with.”

Since her appointment as Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande for the 2022-23 season (extended for 2023-24), Ana María Patiño-Osorio has been gathering praise as a remarkable conductor expressing wisdom, finesse, and deep respect for music.  Chosen from nearly 300 candidates to work directly with Jonathan Nott and an elite roster of guest conductors, shortly after her appointment, in January 2023 she successfully stepped in at short notice to conduct the OSR featuring violinist Daniel Lozakovich and pianist Mikhail Pletnev as soloists. Of her conducting Le Temps wrote: “the entire performance of Ana Maria Patino-Osorio impressed with her strength and her tranquillity of being.”

Following on Ana Maria’s recent successes, in 2023/24 season she has been invited to guest conduct the Iberacademy Orchestra at Mozart Week in Salzburg, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and Orchestra Sinfonía por el Peru. Her most recent engagements also include the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, Philharmonic of Bogota, the National Symphony Orchestra of Uruguay (SODRE), the Meininger Staatstheather, the École de Musique de Genève Orchestre, EAFIT Symphony Orchestra, Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra and the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of Colombia among others.

Ana Maria began her musical training as a saxophonist before transitioning into orchestral conducting. She completed her undergraduate degree in Orchestra Conducting at the Universidad EAFIT in Medellin before being accepted to the prestigious master’s programme of Orchestral Conducting at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste as a student of Johannes Schlaefli, where she graduated with honours in 2021.  During that time, she has attended several masterclasses with Herbert Bloomsted, Matthias Pintscher, Thomas Adès and Olaris Elt, and was invited by Bernard Haitink to the Lucerne Music Festival in Switzerland.  Since 2015 she has also been involved with Iberacademy Orchestra in Medellín where she has been assisting its co-founder and conductor Roberto Gonzalez-Monjas in multitude of projects and has conducted the orchestra as a guest conductor.

A finalist of the Solti International Conducting Competition with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in 2020, Ana Maria is also the recipient of the 2021 National Prize for best Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogotá and a winner of the Conducting Fellowship at Dirigentenforum des Deutschen Musikrates, Germany) in 2019.
