Case Scaglione receives praise following his debut at Opéra Bastille conducting Strauss’ Elektra, featuring Opéra national de Paris Orchestra.

“It is never easy for a conductor to follow in the footsteps of one of his colleagues, when the orchestra in front of him still has the latter’s codes in its fingers, especially when conducting a work as demanding and complex as Strauss’ Elektra! But that’s what Case Scaglione, the current Musical Director of the Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France did, taking over the baton for the last three performances from Semyon Bychkov almost without rehearsal. It was quite a baptism of fire for his debut at the Opéra Bastille.
Scaglione is known for being an elegant conductor, which was the case here, allowing the orchestra to breathe without covering the singers. His carefully phrased reading is lyrical as well as both sensitive and precise in the drawing of the characters; it gradually distils the tension which increases from the scene of Orestes’ recognition by Electra. In the first balcony, the colours as well as the fullness of the sound must have been different. Without question, a very fine revival.”
