Juanjo Mena Returns to the New York Philharmonic in a Programme Featuring Ginastera’s Rarely Played Violin Concerto

16 Apr 2024

Juanjo Mena will return to conduct the New York Philharmonic in April, in a colorful Spanish and Hispanic inspired program featuring Ginastera’s fiery Violin Concerto, played by Hilary Hahn. These concerts follow Mena and Hahn’s recent collaboration with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, “a stellar performance before a thrilled audience. There’s no other way of putting it”, as reported by onStage Pittsburgh.

Juanjo Mena is a master of Ginastera’s music, having recorded three discs of his orchestral works and piano concerti with the BBC Philharmonic, in which “the BBC Philharmonic outclasses all of the recorded competition in both finesse and commitment” (Andrew Farach-Colton, Gramophone Magazine). In these concerts with the New York Philharmonic, the concerto will be paired with Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, alongside Debussy’s Iberia, Ravel’s Rapsodie Espagnole and closing with his seductive Boléro.

The concerts take place at the David Geffen Hall, New York, on 25th, 26th and 27th April. More information can be found here.

Juanjo Mena will return to the New York Philharmonic again in the 24/25 season, conducting Kevin Puts’ The Brightness of Light with Renée Fleming and Rod Gilfry, and Ravel’s complete ballet Daphnis et Chloé.
