Roberto González-Monjas Conducts at the Salzburg Festival

Roberto González-Monjas conducts the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg at the Salzburg Festival 27 July. This marks the first collaboration between the conductor and Orchestra since his announcement as its next Chief Conductor, beginning in the 2024/25 season.

The concert, which will be streamed live from Felsenreitschule, Salzburg at siemens.com, features Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Op. 62, Mahler’s Revelge aus “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” (with baritone Georg Nigl) and Ligeti’s Concert Romanesc. This year, the keynote speaker will be the esteemed Austrian physicist Anton Zeilinger, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2022.

González-Monjas will also conduct Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg  for Matinee Concerts at the Mozarteum Grosser Saal on 5 and 6 August. The all-Mozart programme feature’s the composer’s Church Sonata for orchestra and organ in C major K. 278 (271e), Exsultate, jubilate — Motet for soprano and orchestra K. 165, Church Sonata for orchestra and organ in C major K. 329 (317a), Regina coeli for soprano, mixed choir, orchestra and organ K. 108 (74d), Ave verum corpus for mixed choir, orchestra and organ K. 618 and Mass in C major K. 317 — ‘Coronation Mass’.

Recently appointed Chief Conductor and a frequent collaborator of the Mozarteumorchester since 2019, the Spanish 35-year-old has worked with the orchestra not only as a conductor, but also as a violin soloist, chamber musician and on recordings. González-Monjas, who studied at Salzburg’s Mozarteum University, devotes a remarkable amount of interest and passion to the works and life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Highly sought-after as a conductor and violinist, González-Monjas is rapidly making a mark on the international scene. A natural musical leader with strong vision and clarity, he possesses a unique mixture of remarkable personal charisma, an abundance of energy, enthusiasm and fierce intelligence. Most recently González-Monjas was appointed designate Music Director of the Galicia Symphony Orchestra in Spain, starting in September 2023. This appointment recognises his long-standing relationship with Spain’s foremost orchestra and strengthens their collaboration, as well as his strong commitment for their educational programmes. González-Monjas is currently also a Chief Conductor of Musikkollegium Winterthur in Switzerland (since the 2021/22 season); Principal Guest Conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra (since the 2022/23 season); and Artistic Director of Iberacademy in Colombia.
