Vladislav Sulimsky’s acclaimed performance as Macbeth in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production at the 2023 Salzburg Festival is available now to stream in full on Arte. Conducted by Philippe Jordan, and co-starring Asmik Grigorian as Lady Macbeth, Jonathan Tetelman Macduff and as Tareq Nazmi Banco; Sulimsky’s towering performance “oozed power and ambition, physically and vocally” (Michael Milenski, Opera Today). “Vladislav Sulimsky is a moving Macbeth, with a terribly expressive timbre, with palpable tears, who knows how to deploy the great Verdian song with impeccable lines and rubatos but also hallucinatory vertigo. The duets of [Sulimsky and Grigorian] are overwhelming as they vibrate at the heart of the hysteria of which they are the living matter,” praises Alain Dualt in Opera Online.

“Sulimsky sang resolutely and…eloquently with…a deeply-affecting ‘Pietà, rispetto, amore’ and the defiance he brought to ‘Mal per me’” writes Seen and Heard International’s Jim Pritchard. Mark Pullinger in Bachtrack agrees: “Sulimsky’s… was a tremendously nuanced reading, maintaining the legato line well in his aria ‘Pietà, rispetto, amore,’ defiant in “’Mal per me’.”

Mundo Clasico’s Agustín Blanco Bazan hails “what a performance!” adding that Sulimsky voice is, “unforgettable for its warmth of timbre, legato delivery and solidity of squillo.”

Laurent Barthel of Concerto.net also highlights Sulimsky’s charismatic and intuitive stage acting, noting that he, “plays a Macbeth with a complexity worthy of the role, the director having only to give him free rein in his attitudes, without imposing too much on him, including even when the King of Scotland finds himself crippled in a wheelchair. And vocally the material is beautiful.”

The 2023 Salzburg Festival production of Macbeth is available to stream through 27 October 2023 at arte.tv.
