Christoph Alstaedt conducts performances of Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer at Cologne Opera on 5 May 19:30 and 7 May 18:00. The new production directed by Benjamin Lazar features a stellar cast including James Rutherford as Der Holländer (7 May) and the Gürzenich Orchester Köln in the pit, with whom Christoph has now conducted on several occasions as part of special projects at the Cologne Philharmonie. Next month, Christoph returns to Vienna to conduct Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons) at Vienna Staatsoper on 5, 7, 9, 14, 16 June 2023. Haydn’s secular oratorio masterpiece with be fully staged with choreography by Martin Schläpfer whom Christoph has established has now established a strong partnership with since they worked they first worked together during Christoph’s tenure as Kapellmeister at Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Their other recent collaborations include a staged production of Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem at Vienna Volksoper last season, and the artists will join forces again next season for another production at the Volksoper.
A popular guest for symphonic engagements with choirs and singers, Christoph recently conducted Viennese gala concerts with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Opera North UK, Handel’s Messiah with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, an Eastertide programme with Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland, and he also toured a Beethoven/Witt programme across Europe with the Academy of Ancient Music and soprano Chen Reiss including a performance in Nuremberg as part of BR Klassik’s Musica Antique series. Highly respected for his early classical interpretations, Christoph returned to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestras last year for an all-Beethoven subscription concert in London, which juxtaposed overtures and concert arias alongside the complete Creatures of Prometheus. Next season, he collaborates with Gerard McBurney in a narrated performance of Beethoven’s Symphony 7 with Beethoven Orchestra Bonn at the Theater Bonn Opernhaus.
